Lucas Papademos is Vice-President of the Academy of Athens and holder of the Chair in Economic Sciences, Honorary Governor of the Bank of Greece, and  Senior  Fellow  at  the Center  for  Financial Studies,  Goethe  University Frankfurt.

 

Previously, he served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2011 to 2012, leading a government of national unity during a critical phase of the Greek debt and economic crisis. He was the Vice-President of the European Central Bank from 2002 to 2010 and the Governor of the Bank of Greece from 1994 to 2002. Before being appointed Governor, he held several senior positions at the Bank of  Greece,  including  those  of  Chief  Economist  (1985-1993)  and  Deputy Governor. Earlier, he served as a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

 

Mr. Papademos was on the faculty of Columbia University (1975-1984), the University of Athens (1988-2014), and the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (2011-2013). He  has  been a  member of  many boards, councils and committees, including the Council of the European Monetary Institute, the Executive Board and the Governing Council of the ECB, the Steering Committee of the Financial Stability Board, the EU Economic and Financial Committee, the Central Bank Governance Group and the Trilateral Commission.

 

He has published numerous articles in the fields of macroeconomics, financial markets, and monetary policy as well as on subjects concerning economic performance, financial stability and economic policy in the European Union.

 

He holds a Bachelor of Science in physics, a Master of Science in electrical engineering, and a PhD in economics, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
